What local-first means
In cloud-first software the authoritative copy of your work sits on the provider's servers, and your device holds a temporary view of it. Local-first reverses that. The authoritative copy is on your machine, the application reads and writes it there, and sharing or synchronisation is layered on top when it is needed.
The term comes from a set of principles for software that stays fast, works offline, keeps data under the user's control and survives the vendor. Our guide to local-first software covers the ideas in full.
Local-first versus cloud-first
The two approaches make different trade-offs, and neither is right for every task.
- Local storage: local-first keeps files on your disk; cloud-first keeps them on the provider's servers.
- Offline access: local-first works without a connection by default; cloud-first usually needs one.
- Synchronisation: cloud-first shares instantly; local-first shares through files, networks or a server you choose.
- Ownership: local-first data is readable without the vendor's service; cloud data depends on the account.
- Control: local-first puts backups and retention in your hands, which is freedom and responsibility together.
Synchronisation where supported
Local-first does not mean isolated. Aevornix POS lets several tills share one business through a Local Hub on the shop network or a Sync Bridge on the merchant's own server, and each till keeps a complete copy so it can sell while apart. Aevornix Forms moves forms and responses as files, by email, USB drive or shared folder. Aevornix Mail keeps real IMAP and SMTP accounts on your mail server while storing notes, tasks and contacts on the device.
Reliability and business continuity
Because the data and the program are on the same machine, a provider outage or an expired account does not stop the work. The remaining risk is the device itself, which is why backups matter. Aevornix POS writes encrypted, verified backups; Aevornix Workspace packages a workspace as one file with an integrity check.
Security considerations
Keeping data local reduces how many parties hold it, but it does not secure a device on its own. Use Windows account protection and disk encryption, keep backups off the machine, and read our security page for how Aevornix applications handle credentials and encryption.
Local-first software by need
These pages go deeper on the two questions businesses ask most about local-first software.
- Local-first business software for shops, offices and small teams.
- Data ownership software for keeping records readable and under your control.
- Keep business data local for a problem-first view of the same question.
- Local document management for organising files without a cloud workspace.
Aevornix products built local-first
Aevornix WorkspaceA workspace is a folder you own, holding pages, records, tasks and dashboards, with backups and one-file packages.
Aevornix POSThe whole business runs from a file on the shop's computer, with tills sharing through a hub the merchant controls.
Aevornix FormsForms and responses are files you own and move by email, USB drive or shared folder.
Aevornix MailCredentials are encrypted on the device, and notes, tasks, contacts and calendar entries stay there.
Aevornix AuthenticateTwo-factor accounts live in an encrypted vault on your PC, and the application makes no network connection.
Aev BIModels data and builds dashboards from local CSV, XLSX and database sources.
Pricing, licensing and what to check
Local-first and one-time licensing fit together: software you run on your own machine can be bought once. Aevornix licences are permanent for the major version you buy and include maintenance updates for that version; the licence tiers set users, devices and commercial use.
When comparing local-first tools, check how data leaves the device when you want it to: export formats, backup options and whether files open in other software. Each Aevornix product page lists its formats and its current limits.
Frequently asked questions
Is local-first the same as offline?
They overlap. Offline describes whether software works without a connection. Local-first describes where the primary copy of the data lives. Local-first software is almost always usable offline, but it also covers ownership, backups and optional sharing.
Can a team share local-first software?
Yes, through the mechanism each product supports. Aevornix POS tills share one business through a Local Hub or a Sync Bridge; Aevornix Forms moves responses as files; a Workspace folder can be packaged and restored.
What happens to my data if I stop using Aevornix?
It stays on your computer. Documents are ordinary files, and products such as Aevornix Forms and Aevornix POS export to common formats including CSV, Excel and PDF.
Do I have to manage my own backups?
Yes, because the data is yours. Several Aevornix products make this easier with encrypted, verified backups and one-file packages, but you choose where they are kept.
