Glossary

Short definitions of the terms used across this site, from licensing to retail and audio. Each entry links to a fuller guide or to the software it relates to.

Software and data

Local-first

Software that keeps the primary copy of your data on your own device, works fully without a connection and treats any server as optional. Read what local-first software is.

Offline-first

A design approach in which every core task works without a network, and the application catches up with any server when a connection returns. The data may still be held primarily on a server. See what offline-first software is.

Desktop application

A program installed on a computer that runs there, using its own processor, storage and files. Compare desktop apps and web apps.

Cloud application

Software delivered from a provider's servers, usually in a browser, with data stored on those servers. The trade-offs are set out in local-first versus cloud software.

Data ownership

Having your data on storage you control, in formats you can keep, move and back up without the vendor's involvement. See data ownership software.

LAN

A local area network: the computers and devices connected inside one building, such as a shop or office. Software can share data across a LAN without using the internet, as Aevornix POS does with its Local Hub.

Licensing

Perpetual licence

Permission to use a version of software indefinitely after a single payment. It usually covers one major version and its maintenance updates. Read what a perpetual software licence is.

Subscription licence

Permission to use software for as long as you keep paying, usually monthly or yearly. Access normally ends when payments stop. See subscription versus perpetual licensing.

Maintenance update

A release that fixes faults or security issues in the version you already have, without changing it into a new major version. Aevornix licences include maintenance updates for the major version bought; see updates.

Major version upgrade

A new generation of the software, such as moving from version 1 to version 2. Under a perpetual licence it is usually a separate purchase. How Aevornix handles it is on the licensing page.

Business and retail

POS

Point of sale: the software and hardware that record a sale at the till, take payment, issue a receipt and update stock. Read what POS software is.

Inventory management

Tracking the stock a business holds, buys, moves and sells, with an accurate count and a history of changes. See what inventory management software is.

Double-entry bookkeeping

Recording every transaction as a debit and an equal credit in different accounts, so the books always balance. Read what double-entry bookkeeping is.

Business intelligence

Software that models business data and presents it as dashboards and reports to support decisions. See what business intelligence software is and Aev BI.

Workflow automation

Software that runs a series of steps automatically when a trigger fires, such as a schedule or a new file. Read what desktop workflow automation is.

Documents, security and media

PDF editor

Software that changes PDF documents, for example their text, pages or forms, rather than only displaying them. See how to choose a PDF editor and Aev Smart.

Two-factor authentication

Signing in with a second proof beyond a password, commonly a six or eight digit code generated by an authenticator app from a shared secret and the current time. Aevornix Authenticate generates these codes on a Windows PC.

Lossless audio

Audio compressed in a way that can be decoded back to exactly the original samples, as with FLAC or Apple Lossless, unlike lossy formats such as MP3 that discard some information. Aevornix Convert checks lossless output against the source.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between local-first and offline-first?

Offline-first describes behaviour: the software works without a connection. Local-first also says where the data lives: the primary copy is on your device.

Is a one-time purchase the same as a perpetual licence?

In everyday use, yes. One-time purchase describes the payment; perpetual describes how long the right to use that version lasts.

Does a maintenance update change my version?

It updates the version you have with fixes, but does not move you to a new major version.
